The Halloween show was its usual scary self, however there was some controversy
between Michelle and I about the what the theme really was: Songs that actually
sounded scary (Michelle's opinion) or songs that had titles dealing with
Halloween, death, the devil, etc. (My opinion).  Maybe next year we'll split the
show in half.

For the next show I'm looking for suggestions for songs about superheroes, this
is related the theme of Michelle's birthday party this year, that came about
after watching the movie Mystery Men.  Send your suggestions along for the next
show on November 12.

Also, I'm starting a contest about the media and the year 2000 hype, read about
it after the setlist.

Fireball XL5 - Y2K Media Hype contest details:

I have chosen the National Post as the reference newspaper (sorry if this offends
some people, but a) I wanted to keep it Canadian and b) they had the only search
engine that ordered the results by date).  There are 2 parts to the contest, the
first one is to guess the last date in the year 1999 when the word (expression,
shortform, whatever you call it) "Y2K"  will NOT be used in an article and the
second part is to guess the first date in the year 2000 when "Y2K" will NOT be
used in any article.

Notes: There is no National Post on Sundays and I am relying on the search engine
provided by the Website, I'm not going to actually scan the paper, so "Y2K" being
used in an advertisement or in the classifieds doesn't count.  Scoring is as
follows:  5 points for getting the date right on, and then losing a point for each
day you are off, hence the maximum score will be 10 points. 

In case there is a tie here is the tie-breaking question: 
How many articles will contain "Y2K" on the January 1, 2000 edition of the National Post?

entries will be November 19, 1999.  There will no prizes, just the admiration of all

October 15, 1999

In a vain attempt to be cool and hip I have created a website for the
show (next I will be growing a goatee and getting multiple piercings or
it that already passe).  The URL is: www.civil.uwaterloo.ca/frseglen
I tried to make it simple and easy to navigate, it includes a searchable
archive of the setlists and a history of what I have done on various
stations in my campus radio career.  If you have any suggestions or notice
any glaring errors please pass them along.

As always the Oktoberfest show started with the Wetspots and the
Blitzkrieg Polka (not to be confused with the Ramones Blitzkrieg Bop)
and then more polka than anybody can stand (3 songs).  As promised
there was a set of music about the Fight Club which Michelle and I had
gone to see the week before, I'm still undecided about the movie, I liked
the first part however the second half gets a be too much when they take
the Fight Club to the next level.  A couple of songs I couldn't find for
the fight set were "Kung Fu Fighting" and "Momma Said Knock you Out".

The next show will be Oct 29, I know its a cliche but what the hell, its
going to be a Halloween show, I think we can actually keep it up for the
entire two hours, the hard part will be the Can/Con thing.  If you have
any suggestions send them along.

September 24, 1999

Believe it or not this was actually the last time Michelle and I were on
the radio and I'm just getting this out now.  But before I got this out I
wanted to confirm 1) when we were going to be on the air next (Oct. 15)
and 2) thinking of a damn theme.

The Sept 24 was going to feature music from videos directed by Spike Jonze
but I ran out of time so that will become part of the next show.  The
beginning of fall set filled out nicely even getting a phone in request
that was part of the theme.

Although the next show will be smack dab in the middle of Oktoberfest I
figure nobody would want to admit knowing any polka songs (however I will
be starting the show with the ultimate Oktoberfest song Blitzkrieg Polka
by the Wet Spots).  So instead we are going to the squared circle, as we
are attending a sneak preview of Fight Club tonight.  If you have any
suggestions about songs related to fighting or the like send them along.

First off a shameless plug, I'm going to be participating in the Terry Fox
Run this Sunday Sep 19, obviously the money raised is for cancer research,
if you would like to sponsor me for any amount it would be much
appreciated.

Now back to the radio show, we didn't have a theme as it was only a week
after the last show, however we took the opportunity to play a set of
bands who are playing in the area in the near future (or as of now, the
recent past).  If anybody on the list wants to go to Guelph to see either
of the shows at the Trash in the next few weeks I'll drive.

Fireball XL5 will return on Sept 24, just after the official end of
summer, so hey that's a good enough theme for me, if you know any songs
about the end of summer or about the fall send them along.

September 3, 1999

I have to get this list out early as Charlene and I are switching slots,
so Michelle and I are on this week (Sept 10) and Charlene will be on the
next week. (for those of you keeping score at home).

This means I have nothing planned for the show, however it is the end of
frosh week here on campus, so if any of you have any interesting memories
of your frosh week, or any songs which stand out in your mind from that
time send them along. Or if anybody who is within travelling distance
wants to be on the show today that would be cool as well.

The Sept 3 show featured a couple of sets about the band Unrest, but even
more about its front man Mark Robinson.  He is from Washington, DC and
started a band in high school with friend Phil Krauth called Unrest in the
early 80s, then in 1991 they added bassist Bridget Cross.  The band
released 3-5 albums depending on your definition of albums and EPs.  After
splitting in 1994, Mark and Bridget reformed a year later as Air Miami and
released just one album.  Then Mark joined with a couple of other
musicians and released an album covering old show tunes under the name
Grenadine.  His latest project is the band Flin Flon which released the
ablum A-OK last year (all the songs are named after Canadian Cities) and
according to the Teenbeat website (www.teenbeatrecords.com) are releasing
another one this month.  By the way Robinson also founded and runs the
teenbeat record label.

We also played some songs associated with camping as Michelle and I went
on a canoe trip to Algonquin Park a few weeks back.

As various members of this mailing list were our west last week (some
horseback riding), me, Michelle, and Peter Brown put on our cowboy boots,
chaps, and 10 gallon hats to play a few sets about horses and alt-country
in general.  As well other songs were played for reasons I highlight
below.

Michelle and I just got back from a 5 day canoe trip this weekend to
Algonquin park, it was very exhausting but fun.  Although Michelle
threatened to play a set about camping last weekend she never did, so we
will this week, if you have songs about camping, canoeing, being outdoors,
or songs that just remind you of any of these things, send them along.

We came back from Boston a lot poorer, but rich in memories, thanks to
Wayne for his Pixies suggestion, however they did not have a star in front
of the Tower records in Boston, unlike New Kids on the Block, Aerosmith,
Boston, Rob Zombie, Pat Metheney, and Jonathan Richman.

This week the Ambassador (Peter Brown) is rumoured to be joining Michelle
and I, and as some of the people from the list are on a horseback riding
trip out west I want to do a set of horse (or at least cowboy/western)
music, suggestions?
