Yes it was the Suvivor show last week, congrats to Jayson and Darrel who tied for
first place in my contest (www.civil.uwaterloo.ca/frseglen/survivor1.htm),
unfortunately for Gen if any of the other 3 of the final 4 would have won she
would have at least had a share of first prize. Incidentally both winners
received a copy of the pocket edition of the SAS Survival Handbook for coming
in first. See if you can see the Survivor connection in both of the specialty sets.

Apart from that nothing particularly special about the rest of the show. I ended
with an Internet request for Ian Drury, also connected with that is a plea for
information about a 60s TV show, see if you can identify the show she is talking
about after the setlist.

Next show is September 1, wow September already.

Note 1:

Played for the Waterloo Busker Festival last weekend just because I remember
seeing Dig Circus busking on the streets of Toronto. The Festival was very
good, but as they didn't have advanced schedules it was hard to see specific
acts and as I results there were a couple I missed that I really wanted to see.

Note 2:

Internet Request from David Bloomfield who just came upon my homepage
while looking for stuff about the original Fireball XL5. Actually
this is the second message I got from random people on the Internet,
here is one I got from Australia, if anyone knows the show she is
talking about please get back to me:

When I was very young (I was born in 1960), my favourite TV program of all
time was one in which a spaceship featured with a female as part of the
crew. The only thing i remember is that the term "Gamma rays On - Delta
rays On" was always used at blast off. My Dad was sure it was Fireball XL5
as he says it was my favourite show, but I've recently watched quite a few
episodes on cable and I've never heard these words spoken. If you can could
you ask your listeners if anyone (or their parents) could tell me what show
it was, as I don't mind telling you this question is driving me to
distraction.

August 11, 2000

I was supposed to have a guest on this show, but due to scheduling
problems I had to do it alone. I did my usual set of Canadian music, most
notobly a selection from the first full length album from local
singer/songwriter Paul MacLeod, titled Close and Play. Along with Paul
the album also features Hawksley Workman playing, producing and Mixing,
it's really good. If you would like a copy for yourself you can order one
from www.maplemusic.com or www.chapters.ca, at the chapters site you used
to able to hear samples from the album but they don't seem to be there
anymore. (I ordered from maplemusic and the CD was at my house within two
days) I ran into Paul at the Hillside music festival a few weeks back and
found out that he is now a full fledged member of the Skydiggers as he is
contributing songs to their next studio album. The Skydiggers song I
played in the first set is from their most recent release which is a live
album.

The second set were just some really good songs that I wanted to hear,
after that I just got funky for the rest of the show boucing between
recent stuff and classics. I was very happy with how it all came
together. I also had time to play a longer song from my friend Steven's
band Geh Nackt, a very cool track called Insulin that reminds me a lot of
the band I ended off with Yo La Tengo. I think it will be a while until
the Geh Nackt album is available on-line.

So my 75 year old mother asked me if I was having a "Survivor Party", this
is a little too freaky so although I'm having people over to watch the
last episode of Suvivor I, nobody is allowed to call it a "Survivor
Party". Everyone is invited and everybody who was in the pool is assumed
to be coming, if you could tell me if your coming that would be cool.
Here's the deal: at 7:00 I'll BBQ for anybody who is there, (the choices
are: chicken, veggie burgers, salmon burgers, or sausages), then at 8:00
we start watching the show. Show up when you want, leave when you want.
No games, No costumes. Of course after the winner is revealed I'll also
be handing out the prize for my survivor pool, the possible scenarios for
the winner(s) are listed on the webpage:

Next show is this Friday August 25, as it is the week of Survivor if you
can of think of anything related to show send it in (Eye of the Tiger is

Note 1: RunDMC was featured on Much More Music Behind the Music last
week, the most amazing thing I found out was that when they were first
starting out Darryl McDaniels (DMC) had stage fright so he would polish
off a 40 ouncer of beer before each show. Eventually he got hooked and
was up to 20 40 ouncers every day until he ended up in the hospital and
told that if he kept drinking it would kill him. I also found out that
RUN is now Reverend Run and preaches at his local church. They are
trying to work on an album but DMCs voice is now a lot deeper and he
doesn't want to rap in the RunDMC style anymore. I think this is good,
in fact for me they could have stopped after the King of Rock album.
One of the first "Rock and Roll" shows I ever saw was RunDMC playing
the Diamond club in Toronto in 1986 I was underage and my brother went
with me, that was very nice of him as I don't know if he was that big
of a fan of the band, I must thank him for that.

Fireball XL5 Setlist June 9, 2000

So much to talk about, firstly about this show, Michelle was
studying for her professional landscape architect exams so I
was alone and had no game plan for the show. In one was it was
lucky then that it was SOCAN day, the day they use the setlists
to figure out how much each artist gets for royalties, but unluckily
SOCAN day means you have to fill in an extra set list with the name
of the composer of the song, sometimes this is not easy. In fact
the only thing I could do the whole show was just keep up with the
lists and getting the next song on. As I want my favourite bands
to get the royalty money a lot of what I played were smaller local
bands. In a reversal of my usual format I played non-Canadian songs
in the first set and all-Canadian from then on.

Second, its time for the CKMS pledge drive Spring for Radio 2000,
this time its going to be a week long rather than one special day.
There are a bunch of events happening in the KW area, you can find
out more at:watserv1.uwaterloo.ca/~ckmsinfo/springfolder/index.html
So each show is expected to raise a certain amount of money so if
you would like to support non-commercial radio in KW you can e-mail
me with a donation amount. Donations over $10 get a tax receipt or
prize (which do include CDs, but only for a donation of $20 or more).

Third, the line up for the Hillside music festival has just been
announced and I for one am quite exicited. Michelle and I have gone
the last 3 years and it is always a good time. Apart from the music
there is also a large craft display, good food from local restaurants,
and workshops on many interesting topics like bike repair, building
a straw house, enviro-camping, building willow furniture, paper
making, polaroid photo art. And there is a bunch of women's issues,
natural healing, hand drumming that I never get into. The festival
takes place at the Guelph Lake just outside of Guelph so you can also
go swimming if it is really hot. Although you can camp there Michelle
and I usually just drive back and forth from Waterloo. Early bird
tickets for the whole weekend are $50 compared to a one day rate of
$35-$40. Some of this year's performers are the Skydigger, Danko
Jones, Ivanna Santilli (my personal favourite, you know that during
her perfomance I'll be centre stage wearing nothing but a rose),
jack soul, john southworth, hawksley workman, andy stochansky, and
more (www.hillside.on.ca). If anybody wants to join us from out of
town you are welcome to stay at our place for the weekend.

Fourth, trip out west was good, cold and rainy in BC, went up
Grouse Mountain, saw a beached whale.

night before its really easy (not the recipie I used but I'm too
lazy to type it out):

Title: Huevos Rancheros

Yield: 6 servings

8 Eggs
4 Inch corn tortillas
Salt and pepper, to taste
2 c Salsa, heated
1 c Shredded low-fat Monterey
-Jack cheese (4 ounces)

Fry eggs in a nonstick skillet or poach in a microwave oven.
Meanwhile, lightly brush tortillas with water, wrap in paper towels
an microwave on high (100 percent power) 30 seconds. Place an egg on
each tortilla, season with salt and pepper, top with salsa and
sprinkle with cheese.
