It was everything you could hope for in a tenth anniversary show: good music, good talk, good friends, and of course CAKE! I was very happy with the 5 hour Fireball XL5 Tenth anniversary Extravaganza.

I of course have to thank Jayson, Derek, Sari, Peter, Shannon, Mark, and Cath for coming out to personally join in the celebration. The show was designed to start in the recent past and then slowly work our way until the start of the 90s when my history on CKMS began. Even though the show was 5 hours long I still didn't have enough time to play everything so there will probably be future sets picking up the remaining bits from this show.

And if you listen to one thing (which is probably more than most people will check out) the crazy version of the 10th anniversary theme when it skipped in the CD player at 112 minutes into the show.

OK so it's not really the tenth anniversary of this particular show
but it has been around 10 years that I've been on CKMS, starting out
way back when I called it the Frank and Friends show, going to
Wackyland, a brief 8 month hiatus, then the not so cool wagon show
and finally settling on Fireball XL5 for the last while.

I've been listening to tapes of my old shows, some of the talking
bits are hilarious. I'm recording some of them to play during the
10th anniversary extravaganza along with music that will try to
capture the atmosphere of those old shows.

Its been a long hard 10 years but with a lot of perseverance and
hard work I've been able to make it through. However this doesn't
take away from the fact that I can confidently say that going to
CKMS was the worst mistake of my life. Of course I'm joking, I've
make much worst mistakes in my life (for instance making friends
with all of you).

Quickly, this past show never really got into the election or
Remembrance Day themes as I was hoping, but I did stick
with the new release theme for most of the show.

This was of course the scary Halloween show, as well as playing
scary music I also read some scary stories, well at least I thought
they were scary, I got them from the internet just before the show
and it turns out they weren't that good. One of them had rather
bad grammar and had weird sexual imagery at some parts:

Next year I'll need some pre-planning.

My big announcement is that on November 24 Fireball XL5 will be taking
over the airwaves from 6 to 11 pm to celebrate my personal 10 year anniversary on
CKMS. I'm going to try and find as many clips as I can from my years
on the radio and of course play music from each year. I'm also trying
to get as many of my former co-hosts to appear on the show. As well
it looks like CKMS probably won't be webcasting by then but I'm going to
do my best to get the anniversary show on the internet. More details
on this later.

For this week's show I want to concentrate on mostly new releases
as I seem to have been neglecting them the last few shows. But there
are also a couple of other ideas I had for sets these being the
crazy election in the states and the upcoming ones in Canada, as
well the show will be the day before Remembrance Day.

If you know anything about me or the show you know that the first
set during Oktoberfest is going to be all polka. Of course starting with
the Wetspots and a song that should be played at the end of every
Oktoberfest celebration, as it mentions Kitchener and
Walter Ostenak and has the chorus EI EI O.

After that I played the Rheostatics as not only were they playing that
night at the Bombshelter on campus, but Dave Bidini was doing a talk
about his book "On a Cold Road". The book is part diary of when the
Rheostatics opened on a Tragically Hip cross country tour, part of a
history of the Rheostatics, and part recollections of other Canadian
musicians and their musical experiences. During each of the announce
break I read a few selections from the book, it's quite good and I
recommend it to anyone interested in the Canadian music scene.

There was also the Friday the 13th set, which is a preview of this
week's show: the very scary Halloween show. Michelle and I
will play the music
of warewolves and demons and hell to get you into the spirit of the
season. Send along any suggestions you have for the show.

And a couple of glaring omissions from the show, first off Steven F.
mentioned that however cliche it is Neil Young's
harvest moon would have been appropriate. He spent the night
sitting "in a friend's hot tub,
smoking cigars, enjoying a cold beer while starting at the moon". And
as it got up to 19 degrees that day (for confirmation check out:
weather.uwaterloo.ca/data.htm) I was thinking about playing Beat
Happening's "Indian Summer". Missed oportunities. But as the
scheduled temperature is 20 tomorrow maybe I'm still in luck.

The show was a mix of a feature on the Sixths and the Olympics. The
Sixths are a side project of Stephin Merritt the man behind one of my
favourite bands: the Magnetic Fields. The latest Sixths album is called
"Hyacinths and Thistles" (Merritt likes to have tongue twisters as album
titles for the Sixths) and features Momus, Bob Mould, Niel Hannon, Gary
Numan, Marc Almond and other semi-famous alternative singers. I played
three songs by the Sixths and then one from the other band the singer
is from. Overall this album isn't as catchy as the first one (called
Wasp's Nests) and features some songs that are hard to listen to, but
there enough gems to make it worthwhile. The set ended with another Merritt side project
The Future Bible Heroes with a song called I'm Lonely (and I Love it)
that features the best line I've heard in a while "I can almost laugh
at all the times you made me cry". If you count each CD in his
Magnetic Fields Box set it means Merritt has released 5
CDs in the last year.For those of you still interested

I also thought my Olympic set was pretty inventive, helped along by
a suggestion by Pauline.

As the show this week will be during the middle of KWs favourite festival
Oktoberfest I'll doing my annual traditional set of polka music to start off the
show. I also see that it will be Friday the 13th, I don't know what to play
for that, but if you have any ideas send them along.

With this setlist I'm trying to address the problem of having too
many people in the header of the e-mail. So this week hopefully you
don't see any of the other names and it will look neater. However,
this also means that you don't know how many people are still on the
list, maybe everyone else has dropped out and I'm only sending this
to YOU. In fact maybe I don't even do a radio show anymore and I'm
only keeping up this charade as an excuse to send you an e-mail
every 2 weeks. Think about it!

It was Carolyn Mark-mania on this show, I did an interview with
her before her show at the Jane Bond. The interview didn't go very
well, we got along fine, but she just wasn't that talkative. You can

As a bonus when listening see
if you can count all the times I say "cool" or "very cool", I'm such
a loser. All the songs I played between interview bits were songs or artists
we talked about during the interview.

The Carolyn Mark show was great by the way, very energenic just having a lot of fun on
stage goofing with her band. At one point the drummer's mother who was in
the audience came on stage and spanked him with a wooden spoon because he
broke somebody's glass, now there is something you don't see at a
concert everyday.

For this week's show on September 29 I'll be playing selections
by Magnetic Fields frontman Stephin Merrit's other pursuits The
Sixths. He writes the songs and gets famous alternative people
to sing them, I'll have more on that in the next setlist.

As well the Olympics are winding down and I should have probably
thought of this two weeks ago but what the heck, everybody can
send in their Olympic related songs.

This week's show is very special as I'll be playing an interview
I did last week with west coast artist Carolyn Mark, she is playing
at the Jane Bond on Saturday night and I would recommend it for
everyone. She has been a fixture on the west coast for the last
10 years playing her style of alt-country, she sounds similar to
Neko Case with whom she has also recorded.

I didn't want this to get lost in the shuffle, so I would like to
announce the passing of a good friend a few weeks ago: the Tulane
Restaurant. I was dropped off there after being driven back from
Toronto August 12, and when I entered the restaurant I noticed it
was very bare on the walls, after I ordered the waitress said she
would have to see if they hadn't packed it up because they were
closing the next day. I asked if they were closing for renovations,
but she said that it was for good, apparantly the location is now
so lucrative because of the big box stores that Wendy's is offering
more money for the land than the Tulane could. I thought I might be
the last customer ever, but according to the waitress there were
some people coming for breakfast the next morning (however a menu
did somehow slip into my bag before I left). I think I share
many good memories with the people on this list strolling into the
Tulane at any hour of the day for a bit to eat and it will be
missed. As a side note I passed by the other day and there is
nothing left but a hole in the ground. In honour of the restaurant
I played the song by Jerry Jerry titled "Bad Luck at Tulane".
